Zanzibar Marine Parks
Zanzibar’s sustains biodiversity worthy of any East African destination, with several marine parks dedicated to the protection of its natural resources. These include:-

One of the first marine parks created in East Africa, Chumbe Coral Park offers a terrestrial Nature Trail and an “Eco-lodge” for accommodation as well as an education centre. Mnemba Marine Park Located in North-eastern Unguja just 10km from Stone Town, the Park supports a variety of aquatic creatures and plant life and provides a nesting site for the endangered Green Turtles. There is also an exclusive accommodation facility for tourists. Misali Marine Park Located within the Pemba Channel Conservation Area, Misali is a popular destination for tourists. The Island has an intriguing history of having been a pirate hideaway in the 17th Century. The lost treasure of the infamous Captain Kidd is still thought to be buried somewhere on the Island. Menai Marine Park This 470sqkm marine and coastal area is located on the southwest of Unguja Island and contains extensive tropical fish species, sea grasses, coral reefs and several small islets supporting mangrove forest. The area also has diving and snorkeling sites which offer underwater cliffs, wrecks, canyons, caves and spectacular reefs. The aquatic life within these waters is often very prolific and one usually sees moray eels, scorpion fish, lion fish, large groupers, octopus, lobsters, rays and, occasionally, and manta rays and dolphins. Tumbatu Island Lying off the north-west coast of Zanzibar, Tumbatu has several 14th Century mosque ruins and some 40 stone houses built in the 12th Century by the Shiraz people. Sightseeing, sports fishing and scuba diving are among some of the water based recreations. Chapwani Island Formerly known as French Island, Chapwani contains a cemetery that was reserved in 1879 by Sultan Barghash for the burial of English people, most of whom were officers and men of the Royal and Merchant Navies. Amongst them are British sailors who were killed in the battle between HMS Pegasus and the German cruiser, Koningsberg, in 1914. There is also a tourist resort on the Island. Changuu Island Changuu, also known as Prison Island is about 30 minutes boat ride from Forodhani, the main dock of Zanzibar. Once used by Arab slave traders to contain the more feisty and troublesome slaves brought from the African mainland to prevent their escape before shipping them to the Arabian purchasers, or for auctioning in Zanzibar’s slave market. The Island is also home to the famous giant turtles. |
