Mwaka Kongwa is the most popular annual traditional festival to celebrate the local New Year. It is mainly practiced in southern Unguja, particularly in Makunduchi. Originating from Persia and brought to Zanzibar by early immigrants. The origin of this holiday is Zoroastrian (a Persian religion older than Islam). Celebrations are marked by sacrifices, dances and actual field fighting. Sauti ya Busara Festival Translated as "Sounds of Wisdom", the festival showcases Swahili Music & Culture. A cultural extravaganza of music, theatre and dance, the festival takes place every June-July each year. Zanzibar International Film Festival An annual event, ZIFF takes place during the first two weeks of July in celebration of arts and culture of the African continent, the Gulf States, Iran, India, Pakistan and other islands of the Indian Ocean, collectively known as the Dhow Countries. Bull Fighting Bullfighting is a popular, traditional and annual sport in Pemba Island. Pemba bullfights are relic of Portuguse occupation of the island, which occurred during the 16th and 17th Centuries. |
