President Kikwete, Hon. Membe attend CHOGM

H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, is leading Tanzania delegation and joins leaders of the 54 member states of the Commonwealth for the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government Summit (CHOGM) in Perth, Australia.

The delegation also includes Hon. Bernard K. Membe (MP), the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mathias Chikawe (MP), the Minister of State, President's Office responsible for Good Governance, Hon. Mohamed Aboud, the Zanzibar's Minister of State, Second Vice-President's Office and other government officials.

Queen Elizabeth II, as the Head of the Commonwealth, will officially open the summit.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meet after every two years to discuss issues pertaining to the Member States of the Commonwealth and agree on collective policies and initiatives.

The theme for this year's summit is: 'Building national resilience, building global resilience at a time of global economic and political challenges.'

Among the issues to be discussed include international peace and security, democracy, good governance, sustainable development, debt management and education.

Other topics are the environment, gender equality, health, human rights, information and communication technology (ICT), law, multilateral trade issues, and small states and youth affairs.
